Mildred Haun was born on January 6, "Old Christmas," in 1911 in Hamblen County in East Tennessee and grew up in a rural area near the Cocke County line and was buried in 1966 in Hamblen County. In contrast, most of the women who had previously written about East Tennessee mountaineers, including Emma Bell Miles, Mary Noailles Murfree, and Will Allen Dromgoole, were not native members of that culture.
