Upside-down lights can feel the heat
Joan is trying to replace regular light bulbs with compact fluorescents, but the CFs she's put in her porch and hall lights, which screw in upside down, work for a while but then won't light.
I've had the same result when I put a CF in my porch light, which holds the bulb base-end up.
Reader Kim, a physics teacher, figured out much of the science behind the problem; I'll let someone in the industry give us chapter and verse.

SHORT IN PORCH LIGHT BLAMED FOR HOUSE FIRE.(Local)
