What about patriotism? Amendment would protect symbol; Importance of freedom emphasized by high court This Independence Day, Wisconsin residents can celebrate their freedom with extra joy because our state Supreme Court has struck down a law that punished so-called flag defilement. This may seem ironic until you remember that our flag is worthy of honor because of the American values it symbolizes. Chief among those values is freedom of speech as enshrined in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Writing for a unanimous court in the recent decision, Justice Jon Wilcox explained why freedom of speech deserves special protection. It is essential to our concept of autonomous personhood and our democratic form of government. He wrote that the old flag desecration statute's broad language "casts an inescapable shadow upon protected expression which utilizes the United States flag." Free speech helps make America strong. We don't have to fear the offensive expression of those who would defile our flag. While it is easy for us to honor the flag, we should not let constitutional values exist only in the most distant recesses of our minds, to paraphrase Justice Wilcox. The Fourth of July is a time to let light shine on the values that make America great. As we celebrate Independence Day, it is entirely appropriate to reflect upon the importance of freedom. It may be messy occasionally offensive but it should be embraced by a free people. Christopher Ahmuty Executive director ACLU Wisconsin Milwaukee; Flag symbolizes what majority want for America I feel the state Supreme Court's flag desecration ruling was a mistake. When this country was formed, a group of people got together and tried to establish some guidelines for the people to live by. Considering all that they had to work with was a lot of what they didn't want, I think they did a pretty good job. I would say one of their concerns was that these guidelines not be written so tightly as to have no give to them, for example, allowing a ban protecting the flag from desecration. The flag of the United States represents hard work, dedication and sacrifices on the part of many people to keep this country close to what our forefathers intended and what the majority of our people want today. We have a privilege not too many people have the right of choice. If people don't like what the majority rules, they should either put up with it with the best possible grace or move to someplace where their wishes and likes prevail. Of course, people could always stay put and wait for the next preview of the election issues concerning them and make sure they vote. That is what our country is all about.
