Last spring, during the annual Chicano Conjunto Festival in San Antonio, I called the rest home where Lydia Mendoza had been residing since a stroke ended her incredible singing career as THE pioneer of Tejano music. Lydia's mind was sharp and clear and she wanted her music in order to play it for visitors. I had previously sent her several sets of all her recordings but they seemed to vanish at the rest home! I sent her another set as soon as I got back--but that was the last time...
