John Ashby was born in 1915 a few miles west of Warrenton, Virginia. His band was named after an area near there that refused to pay taxes or rent to Chief Justice John Marshall who owned the land during the early part of the 19th century. To the present day, that region of Virginia continues to be known for this distinction.
