To use transitive inference (TI) is to deduce a conclusion from premises that have a nonequivalent relationship; for example, a conclusion "Jim is taller than Mike" is deduced from premises "Jim is taller than Bob" and "Bob is taller than Mike." This reasoning typically has been examined with verbal tasks. Bryant and Trabasso (1971) developed a nonverbal version of this task and showed that 4-year-old children can perform TI.
