Gritty, with blue-collar undertones, Detroit hasn't been a top tourist destination in many years. While there's no denying that it has its problems, this much-maligned Midwestern city is intent on reinventing itself. Today, visitors will find a surprising number of things to see and do when touring the Motor City.

Long neglected, Detroit's revamped waterfront is playing a big part in the city's revival. The Renaissance Center - a seven-tower complex of hotel, office and retail space with maze-like walkways and spiral staircases - opened nearly 20 years ago to much hype. ...
