For at least two years, Lucien Bouchard has been the most popular politician in Quebec. On January 29th he takes over as premier of the province, at the head of the separatist Parti Quebecois (PQ) that rules it.
Mr Bouchard has played diverse roles in the ten years since he left his firm at the beckoning of the Conservative prime minister of the day, Brian Mulroney.
