As these images from the archives of the Royal Geographical Society show, over the years, people have come up with a wide variety of methods to get themselves around. All had their positives--and negatives. Camels caused traffic jams, dogs had to be fed to each other, and using cars in the desert could mean they ended up on top of you, as British explorer Ralph Bagnold found when he pioneered a high-speed method of crossing sand dunes.
