The 19 drawings Jiro Takamatsu showed in this summer exhibition date from 1978 to 1983 and relate to paintings of the same period called "Space in Two Dimensions." The paintings are well known, but the drawings have never been shown before. They are mostly around 8 by 1 0 inches, and they usually seem to be graphite plottings (there are tiny "x" marks at the ends of lines) with shadings of color beside the lines or with solid colors enclosed within lines. In either case, the lines tend to congregate at the left and/or right edge, with empty expanses elsewhere. The hues include ...
