On seeing a roomful of open books with their pages defaced by graffiti, obscured by dirt and, in some cases, obliterated with dough, sand or moss, it's difficult not to feel that a taboo has been broken. Even though altered or destroyed books have become a familiar sculptural trope, Carole Naggar's "Unreadable Books" retain a quiet ability to shock. That these 33 works, lying in casual groupings on low platforms, ultimately elicit a deeper response than their initial shock can be laid to Naggar's complex relationship to the history of the book itself.
