Irish art has undergone a renaissance since the 1980s, with issues of identity, politics and nativism becoming increasingly important. Topics discussed include the history of Irish art, the landscape painting tradition, Irish expressionism and women artists.

Irish artists on both sides of the border are showing signs of new vigor and confidence. The first of two articles focuses on recent developments in the Republic--among them the emergence of a number of women artists.
