HE was written off as a clown by his critics - and a few of his friends.Yet it seems Boris Johnson has persuaded the people of London that they shouldtrust him to run their affairs for the next four years.

If he succeeds in this task he will burnish his own political reputation, andset himself up for a leading job in a future Tory government, and justconceivably, though we should not get too carried away, for the top job whenhis old friend and rival David Cameron eventually decides to throw in thetowel.
