IN light of the debacle in Sydney against the Van Diemenslanders, I find myself quite happy to be at the bar with a man who wants to talk about shire horses. Anything but rugby, anything to obliterate the memory.

I am still in the land of the dish-dash, where expats gather of an evening at the oasis of their choice and sometimes talk wistfully of home.
