No one walking in the Burren hills of County, Clare, or in the Ingleborough district of Yorkshire, can fail to be impressed by limestone pavements. These naked expanses of rock, once scoured by glaciers and now fretted by solution, have long intrigued geomorphologists (Sweeting, 1966; Williams, 1966).
