The development of agriculture occurred earlier in Papua New Guinea than in Australia at the southern portion of the Sahul continent. Though both were peopled as early as 30,000 years ago, subsistence farming did not diffuse southwards to the Australian aborigines who continued to live as hunter-gatherers. This is based on archaeological evidence of plants in the the Sahul and domesticated species which are absent in Australia.
