For architects and designers, one completely apolitical reason to cheer the destruction of the Berlin Wall was the new accessibility to the great East Berlin buildings of Schinkel (1781-1841). Although his handsome New Pavilion of 1825 in Schloss Charlottenburg Park and some other work had been visible west of the wall, the great monuments on which his reputation rests are all in the east: the Schauspielhaus (theater and concert hall), the Neue Wache (royal guardhouse), and the Altes Museum, among others.
