ABSTRACT Our study describes the extraordinary capability of the endosymbiont-bearing bivalve Lucinoma aequizonata to tolerate environmental anoxia. The clam survives without oxygen for 262 days (50% mortality). The total quantity of glycogen in a specimen does not decrease significantly after long-term anoxia (10.5 too). Common glycogen-derived anaerobic products (opines, lactate, succinate, acetate, and propionate) are only produced in minor quantities. This indicates either seve...

Quantification of Fragments of Human Serum Inter-[alpha]-Trypsin Inhibitor Heavy Chain 4 by a Surface-Enhanced Laser Desorption/Ionization-Based Immunoassay
Clinical Chemistry
; Background: Several proteolytically derived fragments from the proline-rich region (PRR) of human inter945;-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain 4 (ITIH4) have been identified by surface-enhanced or matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS or MALDI-TOF-MS)

Sulfide-stimulation of oxygen consumption rate and cytochrome reduction in gills of the estuarine mussel Geukensia demissa.
The Biological Bulletin
; Introduction Hydrogen sulfide is common in marine reducing environments such as anoxic sediments, sewage sludge outfalls, deep-sea hydrothermal vents, and cold seeps. Because sulfide (the sum of [H.sub.2]S, H[S.sup and [S.sup unless otherwise specified) is a potent inhibitor of mitochondrial

Gill anatomy and the evolution of symbiosis in the bivalve family Thyasiridae.
The Biological Bulletin
; INTRODUCTION Among the families of bivalves that receive a nutritional benefit from their association with symbiotic, chemoautotrophic bacteria (see Le Pennec et al., 1995, for review), the Thyasiridae (subclass Heterodonta) stand out in several ways. (1) Whereas the bacteria in all other known

Bacterial endosymbionts in the gills of the deep-sea wood-boring bivalves Xylophaga atlantica and Xylophaga washingtona.
The Biological Bulletin
; Introduction In 1973 Popham and Dixon (Popham and Dickson, 1973) demonstrated the presence of endosymbiotic bacteria in the gills of wood-boring bivalves of the family Teredinidae, commonly known as shipworms. The role of these symbionts, however, was not elucidated until a decade later when it was
