Changes in firearms ownership among women, 1980-1994.(Guns and Violence Symposium)

Pro-gun group estimates for 1994 range from as low as 15% to as high as 43% when in fact 11 to 12% is more accurate. The press makes a mistake accepting pro-gun group statistics without criticism. Unbiased statistics indicate that female gun ownership is not increasing. The typical female gun owner is a married woman living outside a large urban area. The most common reason for gun ownership is a desire to hunt rather than fear of crime.
