When the dandruff shampoo Selsun, containing 2.5 percent selenium sulfide, came on the market several decades ago, little was known about the effect of selenium on the human body. Although very little would be absorbed through healthy skin, it could be dangerous to persons with inflamed or damaged skin and was thus available only by prescription because of the known toxicity of selenium in laboratory animals. The maker then introduced over-the-counter Selsun Blue, containing only one percent selenium sulfide.
