THERE is a general principle in support of majorities within Judaism.

Thus in a case of dispute among rabbis as to the law, the majority succeed. A rabbi who holds a minority view must nevertheless apply the majority view.

Historically in times of oppression and exile, Jews have questioned to what extent they should be involved in the civic life of the country where they dwell and whether or not they should vote.
