EVEN without its latest bid to crush the only opposition that matters, the Egyptian government had been expected to win at least two-thirds of the seats in the parliamentary election on November 29th. It wanted, presumably, to make doubly sure.
The Muslim Brotherhood has long been outlawed. But it has been able to do most of the things a political party does; the fact that its 130 candidates competed as individuals, or on another party's slate, fooled nobody.
