INTRODUCTION

IN THIS STUDY, I will explore the role of the cult of the saints in the practice of Lurianic Kabbalah in sixteenth-century Galilee and compare this set of practices to the later phenomenon of Hasidism in eighteenth-century Eastern Europe. By way of introduction, I want to stress the importance of the figure of the saint in the Lurianic school, which, I believe, has not yet been fully recognized.
