JERUSALEM _ As Palestinians prepare to make history Saturday by voting in their first national elections, a new quarrel has broken out with the Israelis: It's over the shape of the ballot boxes in Jerusalem.

The fact that both sides are so passionate about such an apparent triviality reflects the immense stakes in this latest battle for East Jerusalem, occupied by Israel in 1967 but claimed by Palestinians as their future capital.

Call this the War of the Slots.
