Stronger relations between Israel and the Lebanese Maronite community inevitably led to civil war in Lebanon in 1975. Closer ties between the Jews and the Maronites had their origins in the 1930s, continued in the 1940s and reached their peak shortly after the state of Israel was established. Such relations were founded on the common belief that Jews and Maronites must forge a strong alliance to ward off hostile Muslim-Arab contact.
