SANTA ANA, Calif. _ It started out as a casual get-together for a 25-year-old student but ended in rape, humiliation and the harrowing revelation that a drug used in date rapes is knocking on the nation's door.

The drug, Rohypnol, is described by law enforcement as a sedative 10 times more powerful than Valium and is manufactured by the F. Hoffmann-La Roche & Co. pharmaceutical firm, based in Basel, Switzerland. Not approved for use in the United States, it has been a legal prescription drug for several years in most of the world and is available in Europe and Latin ...
