Recent stories on Spain commonly marvel at the stunning transformation of a country long known for its history of ethnic conflicts, military coups, and civil wars, to say nothing of a reputation as an economic backwater. "Pass the Cava," proclaimed the International Herald Tribune in a 2006 article that celebrated Spain's "embrace of modernization after decades of stagnation" as "one of Europe's great success stories."
