Diesel is a fuel and an engine but was first a man--Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel--whose birth 150 years ago on March 18 we remember. His legacy is the world's most efficient internal combustion engine which, a century after its debut, powers equipment ranging from lawn mowers to ocean-going tankers and containerships. It has now come to be viewed as the most economical automobile engine, one that produces the lowest greenhouse gas emissions.
