European leaders should not attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing if the repression in Tibet continues. That was the thrust of the debate held on 26 March in the European Parliament plenary in Brussels. MEPs urged EU member states to increase the pressure on China in order to open a dialogue with the Dalai Lama. "Every responsible politician must ask the question, whether he can take part in the opening ceremony if the Chinese leadership does not seek dialogue and compromise," said European Parliament President Hans-Gert Pottering.
