Vodka, unlike most of its spirit rivals, tastes of very little and can be made anywhere on earth with broadly the same results. That hasn't stopped it becoming the latest drink du jour. This year, off-trade sales is expected to eclipse those of blended Scotch for the first time in history. Though old favourites continue to enjoy strong sales growth, once-niche Polish and Russian brands have opened a new front. Armed with the weapons of provenance, authenticity and heritage, they're battling for their share of the premium market.
