Gr-2. Atom labels and other chemically significant text.(GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION STANDARDS FOR CHEMICAL STRUCTURE DIAGRAMS **)

Textual objects serve many roles in chemical structure diagrams, but are most frequently used to represent atoms via the atomic symbols of the elements or by abbreviations that imply one or more atoms in a specified bonding pattern.

GR-2.1 Elemental atom labels

Atom labels consisting of a single non-hydrogen element are the most universally understood type of chemical information after bonds themselves. Elements are indicated by their approved element symbols [13], using proper case (the first letter of a symbol is capitalized, and subsequent ones are lowercase).
