TO paraphrase Karl Marx: Workers of Los Angeles, speak up. You have nothing to lose but your pink slips!

For the first time in two decades, city leaders are talking seriously about layoffs as a way of reducing a deficit that could reach as high as $500 million.

Now, it's possible they're doing this for show, but it also could be for real. In any event, steep cuts and/or hefty tax hikes seem inevitable.

One way or the other, city workers will be among the hardest-hit. A good number might lose their jobs. And all will have to work in a city that offers diminished ...
