Island hopping; The warden of Skomer Island for the past eight-and-a-half years Juan Brown is leaving to move back to another of his favourite islands - Shetland. His place is being taken by Jo Milborrow, formerly warden of neighbouring Skokholm. Juan and Jomet up on Skomer last month for the official hand-over. Here they talk of their island lives.(News)

AT the end of June 1999 I made the big trek south from Shetland to Pembrokeshire, to begin my term as Skomer warden. Despite the fact I was moving from an island national nature reserve - on the Isle of Noss - of similar size to Skomer, and with many of the same seabirds, the contrast was quite stark in many ways.

For a start, I had to get used to my new neighbours. The cacophonous nightly return of the Manx shearwaters was to become my lullaby.
