Thinking difference.(Section 3: Gender, Generation, and Destiny)

From: Symposium | Date: June 22, 1995| Author: | Copyright information

This analysis of thinking sexual difference uses Hesiod's myth of Pandora as a point of departure and Hannah Arendt's distinction between reason and intellect, between truth and meaning, as a framework. The misogynistic view of woman is rooted in the visible fact of sexual difference intertwined with that of birth and death. The female generative power put the male at a disadvantage and reacting to this fact, the male gave it a negative meaning, hence, Pandora and her vase. But this is a lopsided view. Meaning should be generated by both sexes and must go beyond denunciation of patriarchy.
