The man who gave the Habsburg empire its identity in its later stages was Emperor Franz Joseph, who reigned from 1848 to 1916. Patriarchal yet liberal, this monarch managed to retain the affections of Central Europeans beyond the grave and to this day. He did not live to see his empire expire, predeceasing it by a couple of years. At the time it all came to an end in 1918, his successor, Charles I, bore the following string of titles
