Knowledge and use of folic acid by women of childbearing age - United States, 1995.

A survey of 2,010 women between 18 and 45 years old taken in Jan 1995 and Feb 1995 showed that only 52% of respondents knew what folic acid was, and that only 9% of those knew that folic acid was important to take during pregnancy to help prevent birth defects. More than three-fourths of the women knew that some birth defects could be avoided and ways that they could be prevented. Folic acid is also helpful in reducing the chances that a baby will suffer from spina bifida. Women of childbearing age need to ingest more folic acid, and education efforts should focus on promoting the habit.
