Next weekend, the Madison Symphony Orchestra, directed by John DeMain, will present Rossini's "Stabat Mater" and the world premiere of Joel Hoffman's "Forty Steps."

Both pieces speak of human emotion and suffering while retaining hope for peace. With the approach of Easter, Purim, Mawlid al-Nabi and the ongoing state of turmoil in the Middle East, their presentation is well-timed.
