ONCE described as "a speck of volcanic rock lost in the middle of the Atlantic", the island of St Helena is just south of the Equator. It's bathed in tropical heat and far from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

It is also an island full of contrasts.

On one hand, St Helena is firmly set in the past. Drive along rutted roads and you'll pass not just a startling 1929 Chevrolet charabanc but also donkeys still used to carry loads.
