When Einstein said, "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler," he wasn't talking about comic books. Even so, Marjane Satrapi has followed his dictum in writing and drawing "Persepolis," her graphic memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic revolution.
Satrapi's images are drawn in plain black China ink on white paper. Her characters' faces are made from cartooning's barest arsenal: ovals for eyes, angles for noses, curved lines for mouths. The writing, likewise, is straightforward, ...
