Most cases of nongonococcal urethritis, the most common sexually transmitted disease in men, are due to either Chlamydia trachomatis or Ureaplasma urealyticum. A seven-day course of doxycycline has been the usual empiric treatment for this condition. Stamm and colleagues compared the effectiveness of a single dose of azithromycin with that of the standard seven-day regimen of doxycycline in the treatment of nongonococcal urethritis.
