QUESTION Why are there two sets of locks at the Pacific end of thePanama Canal, and yet only one at the Atlantic end? UNLIKE the Suez Canal,which is at sea level for its entire length, the Panama Canal has locks toraise and lower ships.
The Panama Canal locks lift ships up 26m to the main elevation of the canal.There are three sets of locks, with a total of six steps, which limit themaximum size of ships that can transit the canal, known as Panamax.
