MOUNT GERIZIM, West Bank _ Two thousand years after the biblical story of the Good Samaritan who tended to a traveler beaten by brigands, the Samaritans themselves are looking for a good turn.

Across the centuries, the Samaritans have outlasted wave after wave of conquering armies, clinging resolutely to their holy mountain, Mount Gerizim. These descendants of two tribes of the ancient Israelites have fiercely guarded their religious traditions, based on only the first five books of the Old Testament and on reverence for Moses as the sole prophet and savior.
