The tragic tale of the brave heroine Camilla is found in Book XI of Virgil's Aeneid. The scene opens as the epic hero Aeneas and his allies are engaged in a war with the Latin prince Turnus. The bitterly contested prizes are the hand of the maiden Lavinia in marriage and the land called Latium in central Italy.
Turnus had been encouraging his men to fight bravely when the princess Camilla and her comrades rode into his camp. She immediately approached the mighty Latin and addressed him:
Turnus, if courage has any self-confidence,
