THE VOCABULARY ASSOCIATED with the Second Vatican Council includes a descriptive phrase, "a new Pentecost," and imagery linking the council to Pentecost. (1) The phrase and image have, I contend, interpretative capacity. Theological exploration of that potential brings a focus on the Holy Spirit into answering the question, what happened at Vatican II? The interpretation has to be tentative and preliminary because, as a biblical allusion originally within a prayer, "a new Pentecost" carries rich meaning and connotation but lacks the definite, agreed denotation of a doctrinal ...
