Social, political, and economic determinants of chief executive compensation.

The tenuous link between executive compensation and firm performance raises doubts about the governing effectiveness of boards and their ability to influence management by granting or withholding rewards. This study examined relationships between compensation and the social and political forces inherent in board composition, leadership, and corporate ownership. Results indicate an inverted U-shape relationship between CEO tenure and pay, with compensation increasing with tenure up to a point but dropping thereafter.
