The introduction of radio broadcasting in the US coincided with a period of significant cultural upheaval which became known as the 'Jazz Age' or 'Roaring Twenties.' Although African-Americans who pioneered new songs, dances and humor found an audience in rebellious young white people, they were also exploited commercially by the white-dominated entertainment industry, particularly radio stations.
