Twirling moustaches and equestrian statuary: Polish semiotics in Condrad's 'Nostromo.'

Examining signifying gestures and literary pictorial works from Polish culture shows that intertextuality plays an important function in Joseph Conrad's 'Nostromo.' Two significant images are the mustache and the equestrian figure. These have been reworked by Conrad from the poetic motifs of Adam Mickiewicz, the foremost 19th-century Polish poet. These two images alter the reading of 'Nostromo' as they uncover motivations which are baser than as previously perceived.
