Milton's liturgical and ecclesiastical allusions in 'Samson Agonistes' are key to understanding his view and presentation of Samson as a tragic rather then an epic hero. Samson did not have enough insight to overcome establishment religiosity and thus attain epic perspective on true religion. Milton's tragic context implies an institutionalization of the "Holy Revenge" mythology, a trend in 17th-century religion despite the Reformation.
