The West's discovery of Naguib Mahfouz following his winning of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Literature (see WLT 63:1, pp. 5-9) generated several book-length studies of his work. Matti Moosa contributes his own in The Early Novels of Naguib Mahfouz: Images of Modern Egypt. As the title implies, the monograph surveys the novels Mahfouz wrote in the 1940s and 1950s.
