What causes frostbite?
In the cold-blooded logic of the mammalian brain, frostbite is the body's way of protecting itself from freezing to death.
"When you are freezing, your body will not shut down blood flow to heart and lungs except as a last resort," said Dr. Mara McErlean, chief of service for emergency medicine at Albany Medical Center Hospital. "It will keep warm blood flowing to those areas for as long as possible."
